Build Practical Self-Defense Skills Through Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed around a simple idea: technique and leverage can help a person control a larger, stronger opponent. At Elementum, those self-defense principles are part of our regular Jiu-Jitsu programs for adults, women and kids.

Why Jiu-Jitsu Works for Self-Defense
Many real confrontations end up close, clinched or on the ground. Jiu-Jitsu focuses on exactly those situations: how to stay balanced, how to escape when someone is on top of you and how to control a person without relying on strength.
Instead of memorizing moves in the air, students practice with a resisting partner. That live practice is what helps techniques feel familiar under pressure.
Positioning
Understanding where you are relative to your partner, and how to move toward safer positions.
Movement
Hip escapes, getting back to your feet and creating space when you are pinned.
Leverage
Using angles and body mechanics so smaller people can manage bigger partners.
Control
Holding a position calmly instead of trading strikes or relying on aggression.
Learning in a Structured, Supportive Environment
Classes follow a clear format: warm-up, technique instruction from a coach, partner drilling and, as students progress, controlled live training. Partners work together and adjust intensity, so you can learn safely.
Elementum does not offer a separate standalone self-defense course. Self-defense principles are built into our ongoing Jiu-Jitsu classes, which is how students develop skills through consistent practice over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer a dedicated self-defense course?
No. Self-defense principles are part of our regular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes rather than a separate short course.
Can a beginner join for self-defense reasons?
Yes. Our adult classes are open to all levels, and beginners start with fundamental positions and escapes.
Is Jiu-Jitsu good self-defense for women?
Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes leverage and technique over size and strength, which is why many women choose it. Girls on the Mat offers women-only classes.
Will training guarantee I can defend myself?
No training can guarantee the outcome of a real situation. Jiu-Jitsu helps you build skills, awareness and composure through regular practice.
Do kids learn self-defense too?
Our kids program teaches age-appropriate Jiu-Jitsu, including control and escapes, in a safe and structured setting.
